L’Arche St. Louis
All applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license, and be able to pass CPR/First Aid and Medication Administration training.
We’re an urban community, technically just outside St. Louis in the lovely city of Maplewood. St. Louis has free museums, an arboretum, and a wonderful zoo. St. Louis has lots of rich history, and Missouri has great outdoor options such as hiking and biking nearby. Weather-wise, we enjoy 4 distinct seasons, with hot, often humid summers and cold, snowy winters.
Basic public transit is available, but not incredible in terms of options or frequency. Assistants without cars tend to feel a bit restricted, but most assistants have cars and regularly offer rides.
Our community was established in 2011. We currently have 11 Core Members with a wide age range. Most are St. Louis natives, know the area quite well, and are connected to family and friends nearby. The Core Members and community have some strong Catholic connections (though all are welcome!). We have 3 houses–one with all women and the other two housing men and women.
We have very strong relationships with our extended community. We have lots of friends, family, and supporters that are actively involved in community life. Our Core Members are quite active and love to welcome assistants into their activities. We also recently purchased a new office building and are exploring expanding our services to support more Core Members.
What you should know before coming
The support we currently provide is a mix of physical care (bathing, transfers, etc.), and more behavioral and activity-driven supports. Our Core Members all have busy schedules and this defines our support schedule.
