L’Arche Cleveland
Skills Needed
First and foremost, we seek people who have open hearts. Experience with older adults & people who have dementia or Alzheimer’s is a plus.
Geographic Location
Cleveland is home of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the free Cleveland Museum of Art. You’ll also find parks, trails, and great outdoor recreation along Lake Erie. It’s a great city for baseball, football, and basketball fans. Playhouse Square, in downtown Cleveland, is the largest performing arts center in the United States outside of New York. L’Arche Cleveland houses are on the East side of Cleveland proper. Cleveland sees snow in the winter and hot temperatures in the summertime.
Public Transportation
Access to public transit via buses are available. Uber and Lyft are also very accessible throughout the city.
Community Description
L’Arche Cleveland’s fourteen core members range in age from 29 to 83, most of our core members are over 45 years old. We have a combination of live-in and live-out assistants, aged 18-50s with a lot of diversity.
Community Strengths
Founded in 1975, L’Arche Cleveland is a well-established community and has a combination of long-term and new assistants and collaborative leader who started in L’Arche Cleveland 30 years ago as an assistant.
Community Challenges
Similar to our counterparts around the world, we are challenged to be “in” community when we are not able to gather together physically. The shortage of assistants makes this even more difficult.
What you should know before coming
Pre-COVID, we loved to go out and about—bowling, softball, camp, church, plays, restaurants. Come with an open heart and an open mind. We have a very diverse community with all ages, races, cultures and religions and love to learn from each other.
