Geographic Location

The L’Arche community is located on the Massachusetts/New Hampshire border in the up and coming city of Haverhill, which is filled with local restaurants and shops. To the north you’ll find excellent hiking, camping, and skiing.  20 minutes to the east, the ocean and the quaint tourist town of Newburyport will be a perfect local getaway.  Boston is 40 minutes to the south, accessible by car or train, and is full of historical sites, museums, professional sports, concerts, and other attractions to fill the day.

Public Transportation

Public transportation within the Haverhill area is limited, however there is a commuter rail that runs directly to Boston from Haverhill. Assistants can request access to the house van when it is not needed while sharing time.

Community Description

Age-wise our community is diverse. We have many assistants that are fresh out of college looking for a community to use their gifts in, and several who are local who provide stability and consistency of care.  Ethnically, we are split fairly equally between Caucasian assistants and Hispanic and African American assistants. We also welcome international assistants and enjoy the diversity of people from such countries as Germany, France, Peru, and Kenya.

Community Strengths

Established in 1983, our community has many long-term members that live in our four homes. A strong leadership team and administrative staff bring stability, and we are well known in the Haverhill community. Our assistants are very committed to L’Arche values, and enjoy fostering mutual relationships both in their homes and throughout community. L’Arche Boston North has unique community events planned each week, including themed prayer nights, small-group “Covenant” nights, Community Conversation, and Birthday celebrations, all of which are planned by our Spiritual Life Committee.  Additionally, we have a thriving new day program, where core members learn culinary skills and make hummus to sell at local farmer’s markets.

What you should know before coming

The physical needs of our core members varies by home, and we will do our best to place you in a home that will both be a place you call home and a place where you grow.  Many of our core members enjoy being active in the greater community, volunteering on weekends, going out for coffee, or taking classes at the art center or YMCA.  We welcome the unique skills and interests of assistants to help shape our community!
