Portland is urban with strong neighborhood centers throughout the city. The community is near the ocean, mountains, and wine country. The city has a socially progressive culture with a great food, coffee, music, cycling, art, and beer scene. Portland’s weather is gray and rainy during the winter, but summers here are sunny, green and gorgeous.
Portland has a strong biking and public transportation infrastructure. Many assistants and core members utilize public transit to navigate the area for work and fun.
Assistants are mostly young adults in their 20s and early 30s, diverse in gender identity & personal backgrounds. The rest of the community is more diverse in terms of age. We have two houses that are about a mile apart, located in the Montavilla neighborhood, a diverse place in terms of race and income levels. We are near pedestrian-friendly shops and restaurants as well as Mt. Tabor Park and other smaller neighborhood parks. We have a third house in Beaverton, a suburb of Portland.
We are committed to relationships, formation, celebrations, and supporting people in their life’s journey as they live in community together. L’Arche Portland uses and teaches the Rules of Cooperation as a practice for living and communicating cooperatively. L’Arche Portland is also committed to offering Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) education & conversations.
