Skills Needed

L’Arche Twin Cities welcomes Core Members, Assistants, friends, and board members with a wide variety of skills, experiences, and backgrounds. Learn more about becoming involved with our community!

Geographic Location

We are located in Minnesota’s wonderful Twin Cities (St. Paul & Minneapolis) which are built around the beautiful Mississippi River and filled with diverse foods, arts, culture, and music. On any given day, you might find yourself walking through a farmer’s market, exploring a museum, winding down at a local brewery or coffee shop, or boating on the water! Known for its many lovely lakes and snow filled winters, Minnesota has plenty of adventurous opportunities that vary with all four seasons. Our home base is the historic Griggs Midway Building in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul, located at Fairview and University.

Public Transportation

The Twin Cities have well-developed systems for bus and light rail transportation, not to mention bike trails, ski trails, and kayaking rivers for those seeking an alternative commuting experience. Uber, Lyft, and Metro Mobility offer further transportation opportunities. Our office is located directly on the Fairview light rail stop. A large part of L’Arche Twin Cities’ work also entails mutual support and allyship to help Core Members with transportation needs travel to our various community events through giving rides or arranging rideshares or public transportation.

Community Description

L’Arche Twin Cities is made up of Core Members with intellectual/developmental disabilities, Assistants offering varied supports, and an extended community of friends seeking meaning and connection. We gather the first Saturday morning of every month for coffee and camaraderie, then deepen and extend these bonds through partnership with diverse communities and events (see our social media or mailing list for what’s in store this month!). Differing from a traditional disability services organization, this model builds dynamic connections and capital across a variety of porous communities. It empowers self-advocates and caregivers with extra funding and mutual support while offering a unique “third space” where participants can be their authentic selves. So many of us today are hungry for authentic connection, and our peers with disabilities happen to be great at creating it when given the chance.

Strengths

New, exciting, diverse, I/DD-empowering! Helping people connect authentically across many different identities and backgrounds.

Challenges

Small, growing org that people are only just starting to learn about!  Blending the best of old L’Arche with new practices.

What you should know before coming

As the L’Arche charter states, “There are many ways of being committed to L’Arche, and new expressions are emerging.” L’Arche Twin Cities is an amazing opportunity to get involved on the ground with one of those new expressions! That can include some scrappiness and ambiguity –and at this stage, many part- rather than full-time roles–but we’d love to welcome you as a friend, Core Member, Assistant, or board member as we lean into and live out the joy of this  new L’Arche model together!
