Geographic Location

Spokane’s slogan is “Near Nature. Near Perfect,” which couldn’t be better said! With 76 lakes within the Spokane area, endless mountains, farmlands to the South, and an abundance of wildlife, it is the ideal location for outdoor enthusiasts. Turkey, deer, coyotes, and even moose have been seen roaming the neighborhoods of Spokane! There are four distinct seasons with snow in winter and summertime temperatures reaching the 80’s and 90’s.

Spokane is the second largest city in Washington and yet retains a small-town feel. There are plenty of activities to participate in throughout the year including, fun runs, Hoopfest (the largest 3on3 outdoor basketball tournament in the world!), ice skating, light festivals, and more. You will find plenty of shopping, farmers’ markets, museums, coffee shops, and restaurants to explore. L’Arche Spokane is situated in the Gonzaga University neighborhood and only a 30 minute walk or a 15 minute bus ride to downtown.

Public Transportation

L’Arche is close to a bus line, and is within walking or biking distance from downtown and a variety of services.

Community Description

We were established in 1976. Our community usually consists of 12 core members, ages 30’s to 60’s. Most of the core members have guardians who are active in the community. Half the core members attend a non-denominational Christian Protestant church and half attend a Catholic church.

Community Strengths

Our two houses are three blocks apart, making it easy to interact and share life together. Throughout the year, we have Lenten and Christmas retreats, community prayer nights, birthday and anniversary celebrations, fundraisers, and picnics.

Community Challenges

The community as a whole is learning to adapt to life with Covid. Assistants and core members are finding creative means of sharing life together well.

What you should know before coming

Assistants are trained as Home Care Aides and the training happens over the first three months while getting to know the community. Assistants don’t work by themselves until their training is completed. There are usually two live-in assistants, two live-out assistants, and one Jesuit Volunteer working in each house.
