Geographic Location
The Town of Riverhead is located at the junction of the North Fork and South Fork of Long Island in northern Suffolk County. The town is named after the mouth of the Peconic River, which is right in the heart of town. The Town of Riverhead has nine hamlets and is home to the County’s offices.
On the west side of the hamlet, just on the north side of the railroad tracks, signal the entrance to a tiny community that has steadily prospered for over a century. Throughout this little enclave of 15 square blocks of neat homes and businesses, a sign proclaims ”Welcome to Polish Town U.S.A.” Polish Town hosts the Polish Town Fair, an event that brings nearly 200,000 visitors into Riverhead every August.
Riverhead is home to a handful of major Long Island attractions, including Splash Splash water park, the Tanger Outlet Mall, Riverhead Raceway, Long Island Aquarium and Exhibit Center and a branch of Long Island University as well as numerous local vineyards, beaches and farm stands.
Public Transportation
The L’Arche Long Island community is within walking distance to the Long Island Rail Road train station which has lines that run to New York City (approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes by car) as well as the Hamptons and Montauk. There are several bus lines that travel to local towns, beaches and attractions.
Community Description
L’Arche Long Island (LLI) and East End Disability Associates, Inc. (EEDA) began working together to plan the establishment of Long Island’s first L’Arche community, which is currently one home, a community center, and more homes in the future. It is our goal to further develop our partnership with East End Disability Associates Inc. to offer educational and social activities that promote interactions between our members and the communities in which we live.
Our home has a total of four Core Members and seven bedrooms, and our residents are both people with and without developmental disabilities who live and share their lives together. Our Community Center is adjacent to the home and serves as a space for our community gatherings, prayer, and celebration.
Community Strengths
A strong spiritual life is present in our Community. The relationships between the Core Members are very deep and genuine, as are the relationships between Core Members and Assistants. We place a high value on Formation, ongoing training and the opportunity for Assistants to grow in L’Arche. Our Community Center provides a large indoor gathering place as well as houses our administrative offices.
