L’Arche Atlanta
Skills Needed
Applicants must be at least 18 years old, have a driver’s license, be able to pass first aid and medication training, clear a background and motor vehicle check, be fully COVID-19 vaccinated and boosted if eligible, and be fluent enough in English to read, understand, and implement health care plans and respond appropriately in emergency situations. Our assistants provide a robust system of care that requires diligence with documentation; we will teach the system of care, but diligence to manage the system is required.
Geographic Location
L’Arche Atlanta is located in Decatur, GA, which is an urban area with a small-town feel. Nearby, you’ll find a great restaurant & coffee shop scene, National Center for Civil and Human Rights museum, Martin Luther King, Jr. Center and historic sites, a 40-mile paved trail that meanders through the city, and many great opportunities for outdoor recreation.
Public Transportation
The L’Arche home is within walking distance of both the metro train and bus stops.
Community Description
Our community was established in 2012 and we are in the process of launching our second house! Our assistants range in age 20-60+ and come from a variety of backgrounds. The community is religiously diverse; we have a spiritual life coordinator who walks alongside our community to offer faith-based practices. Our community also has a circle of volunteers that provide consistent support and friendship to our Core Members and staff.
Community Strengths
Established in 2012, L’Arche Atlanta’s first home will be celebrating its 10 year anniversary in 2022. It’s a fun and active home with lots of play and laughter, and it’s situated in a great neighborhood. Community events gather anywhere from 50 to over 100 people for things like dances, bingo, and movie trivia. L’Arche Atlanta’s second home will be opening in mid to late 2022.
Community Challenges
L’Arche Atlanta is small— one established home with four Core Members and assistants, and a second home for four additional Core Members coming soon. We anticipate a “learning curve” for our entire community as we double in size. Another challenge: because we are located in a large metropolis, there can be a lot of driving, sometimes in rush hour traffic.
What you should know before coming
Assistants are trained over the first three months in how to support our Core Members. Assistants do not work by themselves until their training is completed. Also, four of our current six assistants have renewed their commitment to L’Arche for three or more years, which we believe speaks volumes to the positive experience they are having with our community.
