We have two homes in Washington, DC (in the Adams Morgan neighborhood) and two homes in Arlington, VA (in the Arlington Heights neighborhood). Living in the heart of the city, there are an abundance of free museums and cultural opportunities available, as well as a lot of parks and hiking trails. Our neighborhoods are vibrant and full of life!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Public Transportation<\/h3>\n\t

Metro and buses are readily available and get you anywhere in the city. Also a very walkable\/bike friendly city. We often recommend that assistants come without a car if they live-in due to the ease of getting around the city with public transportation.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Our community is delighted to be a place where so many different types of people find a place of belonging. Our assistants and core members range widely in age, race, spiritual background, gender, life experience. We have a mixture of live-in and live-out assistants, some of whom L\u2019Arche is their first working experience outside of college and others who have been working as professional caregivers for many years before finding L\u2019Arche. Our core members are truly at the heart of our community, and provide a firm foundation from which the community can thrive and grow. One exciting point of growth is that we have begun construction on a new home in Arlington that is set to open in the coming years!<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>

Community Strengths<\/h3>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

We were founded by a small ecumenical faith community in 1983, and are very connected to our surrounding neighbors and friends. We have weekly celebrations for peoples\u2019 birthdays, anniversaries, welcomes, and farewells, and that spirit of celebration and gratitude extends beyond \u201cTuesday nights\u201d into our daily lives together. There are many opportunities for growth, and most of our leadership consists of past-assistants. We have consistent training and accompaniment, and many of our assistants tend to stay longer term (2-3 years rather than 1 year). We are also very proud to have a bilingual home, with one of our Cuban core members.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Community Challenges<\/h3>\n\t

\n\t\t\t

The community straddles two different cities, meaning: two different regulating bodies, two different demographics of the neighborhood and of assistants. Because of the beautiful diversity within our community, we also navigate how to share life together across differences. In this post-COVID time, we are also re-learning how to reconnect with friends and neighbors who we\u2019ve missed having in our homes. During this time, we are also adapting to the changing needs of our core members due to aging, including the additional physical support they might need.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n

Our assistants receive a lot of hands-on orientation and training when entering the role. While we highly value past experience, we are also ready to welcome those who are looking to enter into something new.
